Unii, back to home

Privacy Policy

Effective date: March 20, 2026 | Last updated: November 2, 2026

This is an English translation of the French Politique de confidentialité. In case of any difference, the French version prevails.

1. In brief

Unii is a dating app designed for Christian singles in Québec. This policy explains what personal information we collect through the Unii mobile app (iOS and Android), the unii.ca website and email (together, the “Service”): why we collect it, who can access it, where it is stored, for how long, and how to exercise your rights.

The essentials:

This policy is written in accordance with Québec’s Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector (as amended by Law 25), the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL).

2. Who is responsible for your information

The Service is operated by Unii’s co-founders, Benjamin Archambault and David Bérubé, pending the incorporation of a company. We are responsible for the personal information we hold, including information entrusted to our service providers (section 7).

Person in charge of the protection of personal information
Title: Person in charge of the protection of personal information, Unii
Email: info@unii.ca (subject “Privacy”)

This person ensures compliance with this policy, answers your requests and handles your complaints.

3. Information we collect

We collect only what is necessary for the purposes described in section 5. Information marked “optional” can be left blank without preventing you from using the Service.

3.1 Your account

3.2 Your profile

3.3 Your use of the app

3.4 Pre-registration on unii.ca

Before the app opens, you can pre-register on unii.ca. We then collect: your email or your Apple or Google sign-in, your pseudonym, your date of birth, your sex, your city, your Christian denomination (tradition and optional specific denomination), a short bio, up to six photos, your language, your consent choices (with their date and version), and, where applicable:

Your pre-registration is not visible to any other member before the app opens. When the app opens, it becomes your Unii profile. The total number of pre-registrations may be displayed on the site, without any information about individuals.

3.5 Subscriptions and payments

Payments are made through Apple’s App Store or Google Play, which act as the merchants. We never receive your credit card information. RevenueCat, our subscription management provider, sends us your subscription status (plan, dates, renewal) linked to a technical identifier, without your name or email.

3.6 Communications with us

If you write to us (info@unii.ca), we keep your message, your email address and our reply.

3.7 Technical information

We use no advertising tools and sell no information.

4. Sensitive information and express consent

Your Christian denomination (tradition and optional specific denomination) reveals your religious beliefs: it is sensitive information within the meaning of the Act. Because Unii is reserved for believers, the tradition is required to have a profile; the specific denomination is optional. We collect them only after express consent, separate from acceptance of the Terms, given at the time of collection. They are used only to display your profile, to suggest people to you and for the compatibility score (section 6).

Information in the “Background and life journey” section is optional and subject to separate consent. It may also be sensitive; share only what you are comfortable sharing.

You can withdraw these consents at any time in the app settings or by writing to the person in charge of the protection of personal information. Because faith is a condition of the Service, withdrawing consent for the denomination results in the deletion of your account or pre-registration. You can also withdraw only the specific denomination, at any time, by choosing “I’d rather not say”. Withdrawing consent for “Background and life journey” erases only that section.

5. Why we use your information

Purpose Information used

Service-related notifications Installation identifier
Newsletter and event invitations (only if you consent) Email, language
Measure the effectiveness of our promotional activities, in aggregate Source (utm)
Answer your requests and meet our legal obligations Communications, consent choices

We do not use your information for other purposes without your consent, except as permitted by law.

5.1 Email communications (CASL)

Transactional messages (confirmation, account security, app opening for pre-registered people) are sent to everyone. The newsletter and event invitations are sent only if you have checked the box provided for that purpose (never pre-checked). Every message contains a one-click unsubscribe link.

6. Compatibility score (profiling)

The app calculates a compatibility score out of 100 from your profile answers: faith (35 points), family plans (25), habits (20), interests and music (20). This score is used only to sort the profiles shown to you. It does not prevent any interaction: you can write to anyone, whatever their score, and no decision is made about you automatically. It is never shared outside Unii.

You can ask which information was used for the calculation and have it corrected by writing to the person in charge of the protection of personal information.

7. Who has access to your information

7.1 Other members

Signed-in members see your profile: pseudonym, age, city, photos, denomination and the fields you have filled in. They never see your date of birth, email or legal name. People registered for the same event see your pseudonym in the event group.

7.2 Our team

Only people who need it for their duties have access to information, with limited access:

We do not read your private conversations, except to handle a report, at your request or if required by law.

7.3 Our service providers

Our service providers process information on our behalf, solely to provide their service to us, and are contractually bound to protect it.

Provider Service Place of processing
Google (Firebase: Firestore, Storage) Database, photos and their backups Montréal (Canada)
Google (Firebase Authentication, Firebase email delivery, notifications) Sign-in, verification emails, notifications United States
Google (reCAPTCHA / Cloud Fraud Defense, Firebase App Check) Protecting the site against bots United States
Google (Maps Platform) City selection United States
RevenueCat Subscription management United States
Netlify Hosting of the unii.ca website and sign-in relay United States
FlutterFlow App development and publishing tool United States
Microsoft (Microsoft 365) info@unii.ca email Canada

Apple and Google act as app stores and merchants and process your payments under their own policies. If you use “Continue with Apple” or “Continue with Google”, these companies know that you signed in to Unii.

7.4 Other disclosures

We may disclose information without your consent only in the cases provided for by law, for example to comply with a court order or to prevent an act of violence where there is a serious risk of death or serious injury. In the event of a sale or merger of the business, information would be disclosed only under the conditions provided for by law.

8. Information stored or processed outside Québec

Your profile, messages and photos are hosted in Montréal, as are their backups. Some of our service providers, however, process information in the United States or elsewhere in Canada (table in section 7.3). Before entrusting them with information, we assessed, as required by law, the sensitivity of the information, the purpose, the protection measures and the applicable legal framework. We limit what is sent to them: for example, no religious information is sent to RevenueCat or reCAPTCHA, and notifications contain neither names nor message content.

Information processed in the United States may be accessible to the authorities of that country under its laws.

9. Retention periods

Information Period
Account and profile As long as the account exists
Messages As long as the account exists (both people in a conversation can see it)
Pre-registration not converted into an account Deleted 12 months after the app opens, or as soon as you delete it
Database backups At most 90 days; they are automatically replaced on a rolling basis
Reports and moderation measures 2 years after they are handled, to protect the community
Emails with our team 2 years after the last exchange
Consent choices Life of the account, plus 3 years (proof of consent)
Accounting records Period required by tax laws (at most 7 years)

After deletion, information is destroyed. We keep only aggregate statistics that cannot identify anyone (e.g., the total number of members).

10. Deleting your account or pre-registration

Detailed steps are on the Delete my account page. Deletion of an app account is completed no later than 30 days after the request. Backups that still contain your information are automatically erased no later than 90 days after deletion; until then, they are used only to restore the Service after an incident. Your subscription must be cancelled separately in the App Store or Google Play.

11. Your rights

At any time, you can:

Write to the person in charge of the protection of personal information at info@unii.ca. We may verify your identity, for example by asking you to write from the address linked to your account. We respond in writing within 30 days, free of charge.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec (www.cai.gouv.qc.ca) or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (www.priv.gc.ca).

12. Default settings

Privacy settings offer, by default, the highest level of privacy: the app does not request access to your device’s location, the “Background and life journey” section is empty and turned off, the newsletter is not checked, and notifications show neither names nor message content on the lock screen.

13. Cookies and similar technologies

The unii.ca website uses no advertising or analytics cookies. It uses only what is strictly necessary for its operation and security:

Session storage is cleared when you close the tab; you can end the sign-in session by signing out. If we ever add non-essential cookies, we will first ask for your consent through a clear banner, with a choice by category, turned off by default.

14. Security

We protect your information with measures suited to its sensitivity:

No measure is foolproof. If you believe your account has been compromised, write to us without delay.

15. Confidentiality incidents

In the event of a confidentiality incident (unauthorized access, use or disclosure, or loss of information), we promptly take measures to reduce the risk of harm. If the incident presents a risk of serious injury, we notify the Commission d’accès à l’information and the people concerned and, where applicable, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. We keep a register of all incidents.

16. Minors

Unii is reserved for people 18 years of age and older. Registration is refused if the date of birth indicates a younger age. If we learn that a minor has registered, we delete their account and information. To report such a situation: info@unii.ca.

17. Changes

If we make significant changes to this policy, we will notify you by email or in the app at least 30 days before they take effect, and we will ask for your consent again where the law requires it (for example, for a new purpose). The date of the last update appears at the top of the page.
